I got this message when I tried to update a device driver:

Cannot install this hardware.

There was a problem installing this hardware:
m storage controller.

An error occured during the installation of this device. The driver installation for this device is missing a necessary entry. This may be because the INF was written for Windows 95 or later. Contact your hardware vendor.

What can I do about this?? Please email me at noemailaddys@allowed.com

Thanks.

if your having problems like this it may be because there is a driver conflict
first of all you need to check
-any other devices attached
-you could also try cleaning the registry that is were the device codes would be kept. when a device is connected it has to let the computer know so they make a sort of handshake and then it is given a code beginning with VID. this is different for other OS win 98 and ME would use this but XP, 2000 would be different
-you should also check the system requirements for the device and compare them with the sytem specs

hope this helps

Hi Mate,
I have found that the best way to start is at the begining, Firstly uninstall any drivers you may have - or tried to install for this device. Next, Use a program like Winoptimizer to remove all registry entries for this device, ( you can email me for a copy of winoptimizer if you wish - it's a freeware version and it does work very well...Then, go to the manufacturers web site and find the correct version for your hardware and operating system, if you cannot find the manufacturer, do a search for them, alternatively you can find clone drivers by doing a search for the device name, like " LG DVD Burner"
and try adding a plus sign between the words as most search engines will search for each word individually if you don't have the plus sign in between them and don't have any spaces between the words and the plus signs "+".
No matter how big the search results are, try and look at each one, I have found that you find driver files in the silliest places, I found a person with the driver file I needed once and he was talking to me in a yahoo chat room !!!!
so don't give up !!!!!keep looking. When you find a driver, disable any anti-virus and firewall software you may have running and if you use Spybot - search and destry, disable the windows immunisation as all of these can prevent a driver from installing properly..
if you still have problems, email me at noemailaddys@allowed.com and I will see what I can find....
Dave..
