I have a dell laptop that has NT 4.0 (sp1) and McAfee Anti-Virus protection. I attempted to install Win2K Pro over NT and received a install message that McShield is preventing the installation.
When I try to remove McShield from the Task Manager listing, it says "access denied" and to contact your administrator. I'm logged in as the Administrator. Can someone provide suggestions?

Thanks,
CJ

Use your add/remove programs to remove McAffee then you can install 2000 pro,if that fails reboot, hit F8,select "command prompt" at the command prompt type dir/p,this will show the directory for your hard drive, when you see McAffee, jot down the directory address"i.e. MCAFFEE~1,however it is listed, type "cd xxxxxxx where x=directory name" once your there you have several commands that may help you.
"DELTREE"+ directory name will deletee the entire directory and any sub directories,"ERASE"+*.* will erase the contents of the directory but will not remove the folders"ERASE"+ directory Name will do the same, you can also use "DELETE"+directory name ,this will remove the directory and files. To use these commands you should be looking at a Command prompt that looks like this" C:\program files\xxx x= the McAffee directory",two simple commands for navigating DOS are CD xxx= C=change D=directory+ name, and CD ..,CD >> lets you go backwards through the directories you have open.Your prompt for navigating should look like this: C:\cd program files=C:\program files\cd mcaffee=, C:\program files\mcaffee\dir/p will show you the contents of directory C:\program files\mcaffee\contents
If this seems over whelming have heart it's not.
E- Mail me at :2372624726@snet.net and we can setup an avenue for talking you through it.

I think your SP1 needs to be upgraded to sp3 and then sp6a.
You can find them at www.microsoft.com or in IE 5 0r 6 click TOOLS then WINDOWS UPDATE, follow the instructions.
