I installed Win 98(SE) on a pentium II 233 computer with a new hard drive. It has a pc-tel modem which windows did not configure. (Called it a PCI communication device, and installed no driver.) I installed a driver from this site that should work, I think the problem may be that it is installing on com 5. I've tried changing the I/O address manually, and though the address is correct for com 1 or 2 (tried both), when I go to the modem properties window it still says com 5. (Usually there is a drop down box in this area where you can choose the com port, but not in this case. I think both com 1 and 2 are available, how do I configure the modem there? Help!

Have you tried using a fax software program to help install your modem, sometimes these types of software will find and setup your modem automatically.I've found this to work on numerous occassions, also try your windows win98 directory look for the drivers folder(start button right click-explore-open windows directory-explore-win98-explore-drivers folder-explore-look for modems folder-choose the pc-tel modem driver. No luck uninstall the modem physically and uninstall it from your device managerthen re-boot cold booting-after startup completes shut down again and re-install your modem, aty post hit "DEL"and enter your BIOS setup, check that the Plug and Play feature is active, exit and save after turning it on.Haver you tried to query the modem by using the diagnostics function in the modems feature in control panel.
