I am building my first pc..and when I am connecting the hard drive to the motherboard and boot the pc I am getting a message that the hard drive cannot be detected... something like dos screen and it hangs at "detecting IDE drive..." but it cannot detect it. When I remove all cables the message does appear that says no drivesfound and it boots from the a: drive.which is fine...
What silly thing am I missing here?????

Have you checked that jumper is set correctly to master 7 any cd is set to slave ?
Yep, usual you have to check the Jumper settings first from the Hdd. They are mostly behind the Drive or at bottom. Every Harddisk need specified Settings, maybe you look at the Homepage for the Proper Settings. Some Drives need seperate Settings, if they runs alone in a system or they need to be set as Master, if a CDrom is connected at the same Cable, and the CDRom have to set as Slave.

Check the drive jumpers settings... eg: Master\Slave. Some drives require NO JUMPER when used alone on the primary ide controller. Check with your drive maker for proper jumper settings. If drive is connected alone (with no other drives on same ide ribbon cable, then you either need the jumper removed or set to Master (if a second drive is attached also). IDE controller must also be enabled in PC BIOS SETUP. IDE Hard drives work best if connected to the primary ide port... a must if boot drive. Also, insure the striped side of the ribbon cable it connected to PIN 1 of the DRIVE and IDE PORT. Once you have everything correct, you get notification in dos boot screen verifying drive is installed.

Hi,
first check that if cd drive and hdd both are connected to single ide cable than also sometimes one device detect and other is not detect. other thing is check jumper setting. than use sepereate cables for hdd and cd rom. than also the same problem persist check with other hdd with same board and visa-versa.other option is change smps power supply or ide cable as per required.
