Hi,

Just installed xp and now when shut down it goes to a black screen with the win logo which says "now safe to switch off" when i press the off button it reboots the machine!

I can now only turn the machine off at the wall socket.

Machine is Viglen Contender C400, Celeron MMX 400MHz. Motherboard is Micro-Star Intl - MS6119 Ver1.1 BX2.

Did full install, not the upgrade and converted to the NTFS from Fat32.

I have been told by a bloke in the pub that I may need to 'flash the bios'. No idea what this means or if it would be a good idea.

Anyone know what this means? I have looked at bios settings before - i tested it out by changing the Num Lock to on, but really i am a beginner at this. (its the first time i have taken the lid off and looked inside which is how i found out the motherboard details)

Another suggestion was that i needed a motherboard drivers pack but in device manager all drivers seem to be working correctly.

Please help.

Rach

just fixed this problem on my old gateway select that i upgraded to XP. this is what worked for me. go into device manager, show hidden devices. look for NT apm/legacy support and make sure it is enabled. mine was disabled. I had also been in the BIOS and made some changes, but this was the last thing I done that worked. also had a registry fix that i found at winguides.com "power the computer off after shutdown" It may have been the combination of things I done, but it worked. It was driving me crazy. Hope this helps.
