I recently installed a new Hard Drive on a friends computer. It is an old Compaq Presario 5700n.

The Hard Drive is a Western Digital 40Gigs

Anyway I get a conflict in the device manager under the MotherBoard and when I go down to conflicts it lists the KeyBoard 2 times and the Mouse 1 time.

Anyone know a way that I can fix this...

Installing this hard drive has been a complete head ache since day one and I still can't figure it all out. My friend did not have her original windows disk. So I used the one that came with my PC.

I have no sound ( Yet it recognises the sound card and you can play Wav files. Just nothing comes out of the speakers ), computer cannot find the modem ( It did once and not since then. )

When I shut down the computer does not completely shut down. I get stuck on the Windows shutting down screen.

I posted this here even though there are a few issues as far as sound, modem etc... but I really need help here... If you need anymore information please ask me and I will try and get all specifics.

I have installed hard drives before for myself and other people. But have always had the original windows disk that came with the computer and it had all the drivers that I needed so I never had a problem.

She does have 2 restore disks. But I do not think they will re-install windows onto the new hard drive. But they have all the drivers but they are all listed by number and I have no clue where to start. I have gone to add new hardware and try to locate best drivers and it does not find any.

I am soooooo tired of this . Can someone just give me some troubleshooting information. Where to look, what may be some problems, what I may have to do.... ANYTHING...

Thanks
Scott

if i were you i would call western digital ,, if the drive is less than a year old they will replace it ,,, sounds to me like you have some boot sector corruption , could be a virus or hardware failure.....

the number is 1-800-275-4932....

i have an old compaq presario 7470 and it has a WD drive in it now ,,,, works great .
on the other hand , i also have a 40 G hard drive that corrupted (for whatever reason ) in the boot sector ,,, made the whole system act funny , checksum errors and disk failure ...
so glad i called WD .. they are sending me a new drive .....
