Season's greetings ya'll,
I've a quick question I'd like to ask. I sure hope it's not too much trouble.
I'm running Windows 98 SE from a 100 gig Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 1700MHz, 256MB RAM with ASUS AGP-V7700 DDR SGRAM video card v5.33a and SB Live! (WDM) sound card. Whew...that's a mouthful. )
Recently I've attempted to install a game called Chainz from mumbojumbo software.
My first attempt left me with a message from the program that gave this information:

Minimum System Requirements:
----------------------------------------
Microsoft Windows 98 Second Edition
Microsoft DirectX 7
64 Megabytes of RAM

Recommended System Requirements:
----------------------------------------
Microsoft Windows 98 Second Edition or later
Microsoft DirectX 8 or later
128 Megabytes of RAM
16 MB Hardware Accelerated 3D Graphics Card

It then suggested I needed to upgrade from my DirectX 7 to 8 or higher. I did and again attempted to get the thing working.
Failed miserably. So back I went to their trouble shooting guide and it suggested updating the audio and video drivers (which they also claimed that dx9 would probably already have done it)...off to Creative Labs for their upgrade (game still went bonkers) and now I have the ASUS drivers.
It occured to me...that perhaps I needed to 'understand' this driver stuff before I fiddled with what has been up to this game, mind you, a superbly functioning machine.
Over in the download section I found '533aw9x' ASUS drivers but I'm worried they might be the exact ones I already have installed. Do you think it's a recent upgrade or the same ones? How does one go about finding a more recent collection of drivers with the same model if these are the same as what's already there?
I've written the game support group but I've still not recieved any input from them and it's been 3 days. I'm worried that the game was originally a Mac product that's been written for PCs and perhaps they might not have any info for me at all. So I'm trying my best to make sure the platform requirements are as best they can be before I need to take valium or buy a six pack. ;)
Any help would be appreciated. I'm just not certain what I can do to upgrade what they think needs upgrading. Thaks so much. Ya'll are great! *hugs* Tish

but you deserve an anwer;
like if I had to choose between a perfectly good system and some mumbojumbo probably stupid game, I'd choose to keep the system.
whatever you wan't?
you could format the 100gigs and reinstall from scratch
you could get another machine, just for the stupid games!
you could skip this particular peculiar game.
you could reevaluate your priorities and act accordingly. sixpack?
anyways, don't mind me, I'm old and hate games
just bear in mind that "THEY" write more complicated software to force people to buy new stuff and viceversa. It's all about profit but not for you!
blahblahblah and blah, sincerely yours with best regards nobody.

I'm not sure where those files are actually going to be found but you might try either "Options" or "Windows" to see if you can spot those drivers. There is also the possibility that the drivers may be in your Video section rather than another operating place. It should be fairly easy to spot them since you have the name of the driver files. Good Luck and I hope this helps.

hi trish,
it sounds to me, there might be some jumper or bios setting which, being system specific, got lost in all that gig, gag and upgrade talk too much stuff.
if I may be so bold as to inquire about your system manufacturer, model and version, motherboard manufacturer, model and version? How about the CPU cache? the bios revision? any info shall help!
I promise to have you playing that darn game by the next christmas or sooner OK?

To make sure your video and sound card are working properly with DirectX run the DirectX Diagnostic Tool.
From the Start menu click on Run and enter Dxdiag.exe.
It is sometimes necessary to reinstall sound and video driver after upgrading to a newer version of DirectX. Even if its the same driver.
"NOTE: It is important to reinstall the latest video and sound drivers after you install DX 8.1 "

Tish,
I like your style.

Hey, if Win98 w DX7 won't handle it I'd walk away. Most people that can really do their own complete install and config of Win2000 or XP don't spend a lot of time playing those games,,, or maybe I should put it the other way around.....

point is, if you're gonna do the game thing, you gotta have hot hardware, hot firmware and OS as well. If you're up to playing a lot (not games) you can probably D/L a copy of WIN2000 from a xxx network and have fun becoming an expert. If you don't mind paying MS some of your own hard-earned, go ahead and buy it now while (if) it's still available. A fair warning though; ONLY do Windows 2000. "ME" was like Win 1.1,Win 2.0, Win 386, Win 3.0: just another Microsoft money-for-nothin' piece of e-trash. XP is just a ton of crap wrapped all around and stacked on top of Win2000.

I would recomend checking what verison of Java you have on your computer. It is a plugin for IE as is shockwave. The little coffee cup you see next to the game means your web browser needs to have java installed as a plugin.

My wife plays that game on a Macintosh and she had to use IE as her web browser and use the java plugin before it would work and the game is not Mac only. It will play on a PC as well as a Mac.

BTW she loves it and it can be challenging, good luck
