I am using WIN98 SE, 384 megs SDRAM, 1 gig AMD cpu, 128 meg PNY AGP video card, 56K modem. My problem is that my memory resources dwindle down to 1% after utilizing internet functions. I use version 7 Netscape browser. Is there anything I can do to eliminate this problem?

Yes, kill the application(s) that are consuming all your memory. Assuming your statement includes that your system has 128 mb. of PNY ram, you have plenty of memory to run Netscape. In order to only have 1% of available resources, you have way to many applications running or your 128 mb. of memory isn't being seen by the system.

Click START, RUN, type MSCONFIG into the box and click OK.
Click the STARTUP tab, take a look at all the programs running. Each program running will be listed and have a box so you can uncheck to unload the program. You may have to test to see which ones are robbing your memory by unchecking selectively and then restart the computer. When you find the program or programs stelaing the memory, then decide if you can do without it when running Netscape.

You can also right click program icons in the task bar and click EXIT to stop those from running. (to free up memory/resouces)

I'm running Netscape 7.1 and normally have 78% free resouces when browsing. I also have 128 mb of ram and several other applications running as the same time. Your's should be that or close. :)

Wanted to add that you may need to look for a virus or worm on your system. I had a like problem with a 98se computer that turned out to have a worm running in the background - thanks to my teenage daughter who has never met an e-mail she didn't like or open.

Once I installed an updated dat file in my virus program it lilled the worm and the problem went away.
