My sound went away when I made the mistake of installing XP. I've tried installing a great many drivers with little or no result, except the one which made things worse. Specifically, the sound has stopped on DVDs, but not on video files. I have the Intel 82801AA AC97 soundcard which Intel no longer supports. I've tried to upload the last update from their website but I can't get it to load. (Intel says to go to the maker of the motherboard, but luckily, my motherboard maker went bankrupt 3 years ago.) I have an Emachines 100, 256 Mb of RAM, Celeron 900, 80 Gb hard drive, & I/O Magic external DVDRW drive. Installing XP also fowled up the graphics, but I was able to find a driver to fix that to some extent. Can anybody help me or would I be better off just buying a new soundcard?

I have since discovered that Jet Audio and WMP 10 will play DVDs just fine. However, I cannot get any program to burn DVDs. PowerDVD still has no audio, and Roxio Easy CD & DVD Creator 6 will burn CDs but not DVDs. I have downloaded the latest update for my burner from the manufacturer, but I cannot get it to install. The Windows Device Manager Update Wizard insists that either A) the location you have specified does not exist or cannot be reached, or B) The wizard could not find a better match for your hardware than the software you have currently installed.
