Then what did the installation disk install?

You should not have used any disk containing drivers as they will only be for DOS. In Windows os's you don't need any drivers installed. The os provides the support needed to read data or music disks. Compatible recording software will provide the burning support and compatible dvd decoding software will provide the support needed to play dvd disks.

I suggest you uninstall whatever the installation disk put on your system then let Windows manage the drive. also, please explain how your drive connects to your system, eg: internal ide, external usb, other?

i have an external drive. i connected it using usb to the computer and it loaded and everything. i went to the device manager and it had an exclamation point next to usb mass storage device. i put in the mad dog cd that came in the box and loaded it. i restarted and went back to the device manager and the same error appeared. when i start my pc in safe mode it reads my device, but when i start it normal it does not.
