Chuck 10-03-2003, 07:41 PM I have a Mitsumi CD-ROM Drive that will not read any programs. When I put a cd in I can hear the drive spin, but nothing happens. When I go to My Computer and click on the drive (D). I receive a message "D:\ is not accessible. The device is not ready." It gives me the option of "Retry" or "Cancel". I've tried clicking "Retry" and I receive the same message. I am running Windows 98 OS. Do you have any suggestions?
Thanks
Jerry K 10-15-2003, 06:13 PM Assuming it's an internal ide drive....If drive is listed in Device Manager under CD-ROM and reports ok there and the ide ports under IDE CONTROLLERS is also ok as reported by Device Manager, then I would guess you have a bad/faulty drive that requires replacement.
Bob Irwin 10-28-2003, 02:11 PM I get the same response on the DVD drive in my Dell Lattitude. It does nothing with DVD or CD.

Based on my experienvce:
That can me one of two things:
Either one the CD-ROM is in dire need of cleaning if this is the case you can find a cleaning CD just about and usually this is the case if you have not used the CD-ROM for a prolonged period of time
Or Two as suggested the CD-ROM\DVD-ROM is faulty and will need to be replaced
AkBob 11-24-2003, 04:41 AM I found that there were drivers listed in the device manager that I did not have installed. They do not show up in the normal win 98 only when in safe mode. If there are any there, delete the any that you are not using. It was causing a driver conflict in my system and this was the fix.
Good luck.

jdsetls 01-28-2004, 04:38 PM Did you check the configuration panel, system, hardware, to check it is present and recognized with a working driver ?
If not just reload the driver.

look for your mscdex file maybe its missing from your windows system file
JKirby862 02-28-2004, 06:53 PM Chuck, try blasting the drive with compressed air. Turn off power first, then keep can upright so as not to spray condensate from can. If that doesn't work, go to Start, Settings, Control Panel, Device Manager,
find the drive that isn't responding in the list, delete that drive then close all windows & reboot. Windows will dedtect drive as a new device & re-install drivers for you.
If that fails, open your cover {power off again} & check to make sure all ribbons & wires are plugged into the back of your drive securely, they do sometimes drop out. {4 me, once in the last 8 yrs & 3 pcs}
Good luck & Hope That helps.
Sharrow 03-11-2004, 10:14 PM I pretty much agree with Marcus and Jim..In my experience most CD/DVDs need cleaning on a bi-monthly period..this goes for your *normal* CD/DVD players in home stereos and such...I work with many units on a daily basis, and most have responded to cleaning..There is a vast amount of dust generated and moved around in the normal house (90% skin..ugh!)...Try a cotton bud/q-tip and a drop of ether-alch.(tape head cleaning fluid) if you are careful when you open the device..otherwise try a normal CD cleaner disk/compressed air..Try that before you bin it..At least 80% of the CD/DVDs that come to me *broken* are only in need of cleaning..
Of course this may not be the case with yours..
Good Luck M8..

Thanks old cd drives can somme times not read newer cd,s
if the cd has been used before without any problems try wiping all
the crap on the cd lense (requires you to open device )
or buy a cd drive that will recognise all disks
wotbus@ 06-08-2004, 10:30 AM Try this neat little tool:

What speed is the drive ? If it isan older proprietary drive (not ide even though it has a 40 pin ide cableNote these drives have id select jumpers for 4 drives)
the standard windows driver won't work and you will have to select from list of other devices or get driver from manuafacturer , also did you change any drives in system ?
Thanks,
Alex

"Mechanical problems such as dirt and lubrication are most common followed by the need for electrical (servo) adjustments"
"A dirty lens is probably the cause of the following problems, discs not being recognized, seek failure, audible noise, and erratic tracking, sticking, or skipping.
"Cleaning of the lens and the turning mirror, and an inspection of the mechanical parts should be the first things done for any of these problems""
I think your driver is corrupted but just maybe the laser
eye is dirty.if you haven't solved the problem try checking the jumper settings on the back of the cd/dvd player,if this is a primary player
they should be set for primary slave,if it is a secondary player it should be set for secondary slave

Suggestion :
Why not try using another reliable CD to run, if still not detect,it might be the CD-rom drive need replacement.
Some CD-rom drive not really can read all CD correctly and of course some CD or CDr poor in quality may contribute such problem.
This is my previous experience and my final result is CR-rom drive OUT!
Good luck !
Unregistered 10-10-2004, 12:35 PM Before replacing the drive I would reccomend checking a number of things.
Is the device present and properely configured in the Bios?
Is Windows loading the right driver?
I have been fairly sucessful using Nec_ide.sys and a version of Mscdex.exe found on the Windows 98 Cd. You can make Windows load this driver by adding
several lines to your
config.sys
device=C:\Nec_ide.sys /D:mscd001
and
Autoexec.bat:
LH C:\MSCDEX.EXE /D:mscd001 /L:N
where "N" specifies the drive letter of your Cdrom
LH C:\Nec_ide.sys
(you must specify full Dos path and file name)
I have sucessfully used this driver with Cd roms from 8x upto and including 52x (a Cdrw) but to do so I have to force Windows to boot from my Autoexec and Cinfig files. (not a conventional Win98 startup)
You should also be able to chande to this driver in device manager for a more conventional startup

The early Mitsumi,Panosonic, and other 2x and4x Cd roms that connected to the Sound card via a 40pin AT bus connector required a different driver (Cdmke.sys and an earlier version of Msceex.exe) may be found on a Win95 disk??
I have run them on Ide (primary slave or secondary master) but you have to load these drivers at startup.

Unregistered 10-30-2004, 07:13 AM hey chuck, you might also check the cable on the motherboard side as well. sometimes you can think you have them pushed all the way in and they wont be. same for the cd drive. if its saying its not accessible, and my experience is usually the cable isnt plugged all the way in. not the drivers fault. but operator error in installation.
I posted this elsewhere maybe it fits here as well?

no need to download drivers ...
you have them on your system already.
look in folder C:\WINDOWS\Servicepackfiles\i386
and find the CDROM.inf file right click on the file and select INSTALL from the context menu..... oh yeah, click the "install" after a few seconds the proscribed drivers will install... and even the cd drive will work like NEW...
This is with my systems here having service pack 2 installed in windows xp pro
this should be a fix for most CDROM driver problems in XP since microsoft made the drivers "NATIVE" to the system in XP
Go figure... :D :p :!

Try Win98 Boot disk and select CD rom support, then hit Enter. Make sure your BIOS is set to boot from floppy. If you don't have win98 boot disk go to ADD REMOVE Programs in Control Panel and make Startup diskfrom there
Good luck
