I tracked down the drivers for an Intel v92 HaM Data Fax Voice for a customer, even installed it on their computer. The connect rate is 40.0 Kbps at max though, and this is even disabling V92 with the ATZ init string, the only one Intel supplied their ISP with. Any suggestions on increasing connect speed, or is a new modem in order?

Thanks in advance

There are two possibilities that I can see for the cause of this problem, but I don't think you need a new modem.

- The speed problem is with the ISP (MSN and AOL are notorious for this). Solution: Get a new ISP

- Phone lines are poor at dial-up location -- this may be a problem in older houses. Solution: replacing phone lines in the house could be quite expensive, so this could be tough to solve.

A good way to test these problems would be to take a taptop and a modem (that you know connect at good speeds) and dial up from your client's house to THIER ISP. If you see that the problem persists, try connecting to YOUR ISP ( uming you have a dial-up account).

If the connection to their ISP from your computer is slow, then both these theories could be the problem. If the connection to your ISP is slow then the second theory would be a likely cause. If the connection to your ISP is normal then the first theory is a likely cause. If the connection to THEIR ISP is normal (46-52 kbps is a good mark) then both of these theories would be proven wrong.

Just my $0.02. ;)

I'll try connecting to my ISP because he's (in my opinion) wasting 22.95 a month to use the same internet we all do. Can't believe I didn't think of that before. I was worried for a little bit because I see some positive feedback on that modem online, but most of it is the this modem sucks kind. Thanks for the suggestions, I'll give them a shot.

yeah ive done a lot of home setups and one time the guy kept bringing his box back to our shop, we'd test it, and the next day he would call our office complaining. Finally i went to his house and observed lousy connect speeds. Of course you always check on the old WIN9x O/S under COMM port and be sure the port is open all way (115K i believe), I have seen them constricted before. Anyways finally I asked him to hand me his phone and I heard "snow" or 'white noise" with his dial tone. I told him he had a "dirty line" . He said thats obsurd, but yet while i was closing his case up he came back in and stated he just opened up his plastic phone-box outside and it was full of water. Yeah it does happen - mk

I use that particular modem in my computer at home and often get connects in the low 50s. They either have a bad phone line or a crummy ISP. To check to see if it is the phone line, have them take their computer to a friends house and plug into that phone line. If they are still getting bad connects, chances are it is the ISPs fault.

I have a "dirty" phone line also. I was getting really poor connection speeds. I used the init at&f&c0 (that is a zero...not an 'o') and am getting 115.2 kbps. I have a conexant HCF V90 modem.

we always used the init i gave for speed issues when I worked at an ISP and we never had any complaints. It works with almost all modems, I have never found one that it did not work with.

Not possible to connect at 115.2 kbps using dialup... that may be what your software is stating but it's not possible since the fcc limits connect speed on dialup to 52K max. Regardless of what the connect speed is stated as being, the actual connect speed will never exceed 52K. This is pretty common knowlege and if you worked for an isp previously, you should realize this.... unless of course you worked at the front desk answering incoming calls and never had any tech support related issues.... and possibly had blonde hair color :)

I can't believe you used to work for an ISP - if you did the on-the-job training instructor didn't do a very good job.
Anyone with the slightest understanding of PPP communications and dialup connections would know the LINE SPEED (9.6Kbps < X < 55.3Kbps) is completely different from the PORT speed which is the UART speed the serial port (virtual or physical) is communicating with the modem. The line speed is how quickly the data is being transmitted and recieved down the phone line.
People shouldn't post threads to help other people unless they no what they're talking about!

[ISP] < -------- 50.01Kbps ----- > [MODEM] <---115.2bps ---> [PC]

That string makes your software report that it's 115k, but it really is not. When I worked for an ISP we would use that string to get people off our backs because they would be getting the best connection we could offer, some like 48-51 even, and they would still complain. So we'd stick that in there and they'd quit calling us all the time.

This is little known knowledge. But if you put the string S11=50 in your advanced settings for your modem it will tell it to speeddial the access #

when I installed the old kickxxx 'Amquest' modem. conected at 230,400 bps appeared, but the bites received wold still come in only about 8 or 9 K per second.
how is that for a chitchat?
