I have a Canoscan FB620U. It worked on my old computer with Windows98.
I bought a new computer with WindowsXP.
I plugged the Canoscan into a USB port. "Found new hardware" wizard appeared.
When I tried to install the driver which came on the original CD - Windows XP warned that it may not be compatible. So I unplugged the Canoscan and searched the Internet for a driver.

I downloaded driver SG-CSU 522.exe on website www.driverguide.com
then I double-clicked on the driver in c:\temp folder. It installed itself. It displayed instructions on how to fill in the "found new hardware" wizard.
I again plugged the Canoscan into a USB port.
This time the "Found new hardware" wizard did not appear.
The Canoscan does not appear in Programs, nor in Search results.
It does appear in Device Manager, but it will not run.
I went to Control Panel > Add Hardware and tried the wizard. It gave the message:
"Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware because a previous instance of the device driver is still in memory. (Code 38)".
How can I make Canoscan run?

Thanks.
Sylvia

There are no drivers posted on the driverguide.com link you posted. That's driverguide.com's homepage. When mentioning that you downloaded a certain file from any website, it's important that you provide a specific link to that file. Otherwise we have no way to know if it's a good file or a corrupt file or if it's the corrrect driver. I would suggest you first visit the Canon website and obtain the correct driver for your scanner model. Then uninstall any drivers you have previously installed... then install the one downloaded from Canon. Any drivers loaded in "memory" should automatically clear once the pc is rebooted.
Drivers installed on a hard drive and drivers loaded in memory are not the same.
