This problem is caused by APM (automatic power management) Be warned though....you may lose certain drivers, such as graphics, CD-ROM etc. berkant KIRCALI 12-11-2003, 08:31 AM I have a problem with a win 98 computer that will reboot after you shut it down. But after doing some upgrade downloads, it instead would reboot after a shutdown. Drove me crazy. Eventually went back to the original 'working' copy of the OS and copied from that file CONFIGMG.VXD into the new OS copy. That fixed it. Now this other computer would not reboot and again would display that "safe to turn off" message instead. Suggest one be very careful about 'upgrading' the shutdown drivers from MS such as 4756US8.EXE (I think the offending upgrade software was). Never found a comprehensive explaination of how the shutdown software works - and therefore don't expect any good explanation in the future. Burnmaster 02-11-2004, 01:45 AM When i was using 98 and had the problem. i believe u can still find the drivers u need at driverguide .com. u need to find the 98vxd driver file for that problem. terry 02-11-2004, 03:19 AM When i was using 98 and had the problem. i believe u can still find the drivers u need at driverguide .com. u need to find the 98vxd driver file for that problem. go to : http://support.microsoft.com/support/windows/tshoot for a troubleshooter & information on shut down issues . hope this helps, terry Guest 02-26-2004, 09:29 PM check your autoexec.bat file UNLESS the user chooses to 'Restart the computer in MS-DOS Mode' AUTOEXEC.BAT/CONFIG.SYS are NOT executed on shutdown. My suggestions are: - Disable quickshutdow - Check your network card if you have one, they can often cause problems. Try disabling it in device manager temporailiy and see if this solves your problem. -Try changing the powermanagement settings in BIOS to APM, not ACPI (98 doesnt have good support for ACPI) - Corruput installation of Win98, attempt to re-install - Disable WOL (Wake on LAN) - Attempt to disable Anti-virus software temporaily, some packages that scan at shutdown can sometimes play up. If this solves the problem, uninstall your AV package then re-install. - Download updates for your motherboard drivers- or upgrade your motherboard. - OR upgrade to WIn98 SE if you dont already have it, sooo many bugs fixed in SE compared to 1E. neil (uk4net.com) 04-02-2004, 09:33 AM I have a problem with a win 98 computer that will reboot after you shut it down. However, it does not give the word " its safe to ... " before it off-power itself. How can i get that wording " its safe to shut ...." back? repost:- need help. my bios is 1984-2003 Award Software when i shut down the pc, it was as usual that is at start/shut down/shut and the pc is able to shut down automatically with the wording "its safe to shut down..." and then it off automatically. i must have done something/delete when i go to accessories/system tools/ welcome to window (left or right click etc). now when i want to shut down and click 'shut down' it gives a message that "its busy...." and give u 3 options boxes, wait, end task, cancel. when i click end task, and repeat the shut down procedure, it shut down ok but this time it did not give the message that " its safe to shut down", it by pass the "busy ..." message. But when i restart the pc and want to shut down, i have to face the same problem, the message " its busy...." appears and i have to repeat the above process before i can get it shut down. i go to control panel and see that there is something missing. Under Power Mgt properties menu, under the Power Scheme tag, the section on 'setting for Always On power scheme' everything below this has disappeared. Under the Advance tag, it only have ONE uncheck box for Always show icon on the task bar, while the other box and the rest under Power buttons has disappeared. How can i get back to normal shut down that it is when i click start/shut down/shut down and it gives me the normal message of 'its safe to shut down' and it shut down by itself and not giving me the "busy" message. when i go to the bios, under Poer Management Setup menu, it has ACPI suspend Type - "S1(POS)" ((for this there are 2 options, as follows:- S1- Set suspend type to Power On Suspend under ACP1 OS S3- Set suspend type to Suspend to RAM under ACPI OS)) also in the BIOS, have this function AC BACK Function -"Soft-Off" ((for this there are 3 options, as follows:- Soft-Off - Always in off state when AC Back Full-On - Always power on system when AC back Memory- System power on depends on the status before AC lost)) other functions in the bios are:- Power LED in S1 state - "Blinking" Soft-Off by PWR CTTN - "Instant-Off" PME Event Wake Up- "Enabled" ModemRingOn - "Enabled' Resume by Alarm - "Disabled" Power On By Mouse - "Disabled" Power On By Keyboard - "Disabled" appreciate if someone can help. many thanks .. unquote UNLESS the user chooses to 'Restart the computer in MS-DOS Mode' AUTOEXEC.BAT/CONFIG.SYS are NOT executed on shutdown.
