Jerry K 10-01-2003, 01:29 PM Either remove your exisiting internal pci modem device or load the drivers for it. It doesn't make sense that you have an external usb connected modem and left an internal one inside your computer. With cable internet service you no longer need the internal modem.

You could leave the internal in, but will need to select the usb as your default modem. Since it won't install, removing it completely (not just the drivers) is a good idea so it won't be recognized at startup. Even after Removing a pci modem Windows will remember the driver, so odds are if you remove it but reboot the system it's gonna reinstall the dumb thing. Hope you're on your way
Hi, I am new to this forum.
i am having the same problem.
PCI SIMPLE COMMUNICATIONS CONTROLLER
Is this just a standard .inf driver file that works for all modems or do i need a specific one. The problem is i don't know what make the modem is and cant find anything to get this pc on the net.
Any help is appreciated

Titus 10-09-2003, 11:50 PM Hey this might be the answer the my porblem. I just reformatted my computer and I can't dial up to the net because it says it cannot connect to the modem. Nor when I try to click "more info" in the diagnostics tab, it doesn't seem to find the modem ( internal modem) and I have noticed in device manager than there is a question mark beside PCI communication device. I don't know what it does.. can someone help? Tell me what it's for and what I need to reinstall it?
All help will be appreciated.
Jerry K 10-15-2003, 05:05 PM Folks ... "PCI Communications Device" is simply a generic name that Windows will assign to a modem when it cannot figure out what it is. You must know what modem/chipset you have in order to get the correct driver from the chipmaker or modem manufacturer. There are several ways to id WHO made the modem. Please read our Modem Help Guide (link below) to learn how to do this.

Breanne 01-26-2004, 07:38 PM Jerry,
I just reformatted my hard drive and reinstalled WIN98SE. Now I am having a problem similar to the other posts. My system does not detect any modems, instead it lists my modem under Other Devices in the device manager as "PCI Communications Device" it also lists below that "PCI Ethernet Controller" and "PCI Multimedia Audio Device". My modem is an Atech ATS-256 with FCC ID: LNQU SA-32756-M5-E. I believe that the chipset is shown as LUCENT HV90P-T. It sits in a PCI slot (I have two). I have downloaded drivers with all the same numbers from driverguide.com but I cannot get my computer to install one. I have tried placing the driver on a floppy and pointing the computer to the disk when it detects the pci device and asks for the driver. Each time it tells me that the specified location does not contain information for my device and that windows cannot find a driver. It does this for each of the device notations listed above. I have also tried installing it through the device manager and by adding new hardware after removing all listings in the device manager for Other Devices. I am assuming that I am running into some sort of conflict. A friend told me that perhaps my computer is seeing my modem as a duplicate sound card. But I have no clue what steps to take in order to correctly install the driver and remedy this situation. I have been working on this for nearly two weeks and have read all available advice I could find online but have gotten nowhere.
P.S. I also have another modem which was working in the system before I formatted it. I switched modems because I was getting the same issues with the first one and was not having as much luck finding drivers for it. The other modem is a FB PCTEL AMR with FCC ID: 6WICHN-35714-M5-E and listed on the is AMR V1.2. This modem sits in an AMR slot above my PCI slots.
All suggestions are welcome. I will try anything at this point. (Except throwing it out the window, even though I have thought about it. This is only because it does not belong to me, but instead to a family member.) Please help.
Thanks.
Breanne

Atech doesn't build modems... ATS-256 is only a transformer part number built by Atech.
You modem is built by Phoebe Micro, Model CMVA56KLUPCI (with Lucent chipset). Windows 95 and Windows 98 drivers are available by clicking this link:
http://www.phoebemicro.com/drivers/56kinternal/56KLUPCI.exe
Please post future modem driver requests in the DRIVER REQUEST FORUM, Modem Section. :)

Sorry for posting here, I though I had the correct drivers and this was the closest forum topic to my problem. But thank you for your help. I downloaded the driver from above and the computer actually tried to install it for the first time. I installed the modem and let the computer detect it and search for the driver on the floppy. But, there was still a problem. While extracting the files, it told me that it was unable to find the file 'ltmodem.vxd' on the floppy. Can this file be found somewhere else or should it have been in the downloaded files. Or should I be installing this another way such as through 'add new hardware'.
I would appreciate any suggestions. Thank you.
P.S. Also missing the 'ltvcd.vxd' file. If I skip these files it then prompts for the driver for the Wave Device For Voice Modem. Do I need a seperate driver for this or is it in the driver for the modem or is it not necessary to install a driver for this? Thanks.

both files are included with this driver... all driver files needed are in the set. If you do not have those drivers then your download was corrupted or short. Re-download the driver and extract it... you will see the needed files are included.

I actually posted something similar in the controllers section. My modem is already fully installed with all drivers, yet Win 2000 is still trying to find out what this PCI communications device is. this modem is completely different from the one that was in here originally. the original one was a HSP56 Micromodem, while the current one is a Lucent Win modem. The computer is my brother's so I'm loaning him the use of my modem since his doesn't seem to want to work. I've totally uninstalled the hardware and uninstalled the Simple PCI Controller and it is still detecting it after rebooting the computer. I'm not a total newbie and my husband is a certified tech, but even he can't say why it is doing this.
Unregistered 08-07-2004, 10:13 PM If your motherboard has a on board modem you will need to disable it.
This is sometimes done with a jumper on the MB or in the BIOS.
