Hi
Wondering if someone could help.
Initially I lost the cdrom drive in my computer (after windows have added some unhelpful updates) I have removed upper and lower filter keys etc and tried other fixes such as scanning for new hardware in the device manager which both worked for a while.
I am looking for a driver for a Matshita UJ840D as mine have been uninstalled.
Scanning for new hardware will not get windows to look for new drivers and I don't know how to unplug the power from the cdrom drive inside the laptop to force windows to find new hardware/drivers (I have a Compaq Presario V4215EA).
Could someone tell me where I can find the drivers (if they exist) or how to remove the power to the cdrom drive?
Many thanks

Optical drives never require a driver when used in any Windows os from Win95 up. Windows XP and Windows Vista both provide native support that allows an optical drive
to read a data or music disk and to burn a cd-r disk. No support for playing dvd disks, avi or mpeg video files, or for burning cd-rw disks. For those tasks, compatible 3rd.
party recording & dvd decoding software is required.
Fix #1:
If your problem is non-detection, ie: drive is not listed in My Computer, please read post #24 in this thread: http://forums.driverguide.com/showthread.php?t=21669&page=4
It contains manual instructions on the delete the upper and lower filters fix, that will solve the problem.
If only one of the two filters are listed, just proceed with deleting it only, then resume.
Fix #2:
Also, there is a STICKY posted in this forum that contains a file from Microsoft and instructions that will do this registry edit automatically instead of having to do it manually.
You can find this thread here: http://forums.driverguide.com/showthread.php?t=30011
Fix #3: (Recomended to perform this fix over all other fixes)
And here's another method (CdGone.zip) that will do this procedure automatically for you if you're afraid to edit the registry manually.
http://forums.driverguide.com/showthread.php?t=22131
(automatic fix, post #7, download file: CdGone.zip)
Unzip the file, then launch it.
I highly recommend this fix to use before the others.
It's quick and requires no skill to use.
Fix #4:
Alternately, download and install the DVD fix from this Web site: http://www.dougknox.com/xp/scripts/xp_cd_dvd_fix.vbs
Download the file and save it to Desktop. Open an "admin" Command Prompt
Note: You must copy and paste (into Notepad) the text on the Doug Knox page then save it as xp_cd_dvd_fix.vbs
and run the .vbs file by typing the following at the console window:
wscript.exe "%userprofile%\desktop\xp_cd_dvd_fix.vbs"
Now.... after performing this fix, don't reboot yet. Next, (in Device Manager), uninstall all optical drives listed (if none are listed, continue with next step)...
Reboot the pc or "scan for hardware changes". Your drive(s) should now be visible in My Computer and work properly.
If the drive still fails to work properly after performing any of these fixes, it most likely will need to be replaced.
Also, for optical drive problems in Windows Vista, read this HP web page. (h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c00817052&lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en&product=3752864&os=2093&lang=en) Even though it's for HP/Compaq machines, the same principal applies to all modern IDE optical
drives regardless of brand.
If your drive stopped working after installing an Adobe product, please read this thread. (kb.adobe.com/selfservice/viewContent.do?externalId=kb402306&sliceId=1) Note: about 2/3rds. down the page is a video that shows how to perform the "delete
upper and lower filters fix".
This is a multi-page thread dealing with issues of the optical drive and problems encountered in Windows XP and Vista. It covers a lot of issues and the most common causes
and solutions. Click here (discuss.extremetech.com/forums/thread/1004364399.aspx) to read the thread.
You can get instructions for performing this fix from Microsoft at this page [Windows XP] (support.microsoft.com/kb/314060) and from this page. [Windows 2000] (support.microsoft.com/kb/314060/nl)

Hi all,
I my case I couldn't read or bur any burn DVD of mine. I could read CD and original DVD's and nothing else...
...after searching for three days all over internet I found out solution:
you do not need drivers or new firmware, all you have to do is to change you DMA mode to PIO mode option.
Here's how:
1. Go to Start
2. Right click My Computer
3. Select Manage from the resulting menu
4. In the Computer Management window, select Device Manager
5. In the right pane, click to expand IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers
6. Identify your CD/DVD drive in the expanded menu and right click the appropriate drive
7. Select Properties
8. In the Properties windows, click the Advanced Settings tab
9. In the Transfer Mode box that represents your CD/DVD drive (typically Device 1), open the drop down menu and select PIO Only
10. Click OK and exit all windows.
If this does not resolve your issue, then you will need to go back using the above procedure and change the Device 1 in step #9 back to "DMA if available". Then, change Device 0 to "PIO Only" in the Transfer Mode box.
Device 0: Primary IDE Channel
Device 1: Secondary IDE Channel
It sound stupid but this way it works, and thats important...
