Hi All.
I have a Fujitsu Siemens SCALEO P (D1740) Desktop that will not see USB devices, although all relevant USB drivers are installed, (NO Coflicts in DM). There are 6 USB ports, (2 on Front Panel, connected correctly), and 4 Onboard. All BIOS settings seem to be OK in accordance to the Mobo Manual, but when I connect USB stick to Front ports, and 1 of the rear Ports, the Light comes on on the USB stick, but device is not seen by PC, and it should be Plug n Play. I have tried using different USB devices in all USB Ports, and none function, however, as I said, the USB Stick light comes on in 3 of the 6 Ports. I need a BIOS update pls, (the BIOS version I have is 5.00 R1.05. 1740 (Pheonix). The Mobo is using the Intel 82801DB Chipset, for which the Drivers are included in the OS, although I have downloaded them anyway, but the problem still exists, so that leaves 2 options, a BIOS issue or faulty Mobo. I cant find anything anywhere relating to a BIOS update. Alternatively, can someone perhaps offer a solution to this problem. All assistance gratefully accepted. I am running XP Pro with SP2.

When you say all relevant USB drivers are installed, are you referring to the usb controller or the USB devices connected to the USB ports?

If usb ports are reported by Device Manager as working, then the only thing left as a suspect are the connections from the USB front ports to the motherboard. And if some of the rear ports work and some don't then I'd suspect something's been plugged into one or more of the rear usb ports that caused damage to that particular usb port and now certain ports won't work. One of the main offenders are those rs232 serial port to USB adapters and/or parallel port to USB adapters. Nothing short of a motherboard exchange will cure that problem. Or you can buy an externally powered USB hub plugged into one of the REAR working usb ports and usually have an adequate number of usb ports to get by. Don't use any hub unless it has a power supply plugged into it. You have to use an externally powered hub in order to get sufficient current to the usb devices for them to work properly.

If you have a USB thumb drive, then use it to test all ports one at a time with nothing inserted into any usb port except the usb thumb drive. When inserted (ie: hot plugged), the os should detect and install the drive within 5~10 seconds. And it should give you notification that the drive is now ready to use. Move it to all other usb ports and see which one's work and which ones don't. Then place a piece of tape over the bad ports so no one can plug a device into that particular port. In certain instances, plugging a working usb device into a bad usb port can cause damage to the usb device itself.... so be sure and don't use the bad usb ports.

Thanks for the reply Jerry, and I apologise for the delay, been on holiday.

When I said all drivers are installed, I referred to the USB Controllers, (of which there are 4 installed in Device Manager).

I think you have probably hit the 'nail on the head', by saying that it is a Motherboard problem, because as I said in the initial request, when connected to 3 of the ports, the USB Stick light comes on, although the OS does not detect that the USB Stick is actually connected in any way shape or form.

If, in the depths of your knowledge or experiences, you have encountered something similar and can think of any other cause, I would be grateful for direction, otherwise I will inform the owner of the PC, that the USB Ports are a lost cause.

Thanks again
