Optical drives never require a driver when used in any Windows os from Win95 up. Windows XP and Windows Vista both provide native support that allows
an optical drive to read a data or music disk. No support for burning cd-r or cd-rw disks. For this task, compatible 3rd. party recording software is required.

What is the problem, ie: drive is not detected, other?

Have you checked the USB ports in Device Manager to insure there's not a problem there?

Is the USB cable plugged directly to a USB port on the BACKSIDE of the pc? If not, it should be. Also, if you have it plugged into a hub, remove and plug directly to usb port on the PC, then test again.
