Optical drives never require a driver when used in Windows 98. That's because the OS provides native support that allows the drive to read a data or music disk. In order to read dvd movie disks, compatible 3rd. party dvd decoding software is required. Is the drive listed in My Computer? If it's not, then you have some problem preventing detection.

Note: You cannot have an internal drive with a parallel port interface.
