Keep in mind these machines are known to have card slots that can be damaged by a comparitively small drop of the laptop onto a tabletop. If not, a driver reinstall should be effected easily if you just go to safe mode and delete any corrupted driver and reboot into normal mode as this driver should already be in the XP installation system. Other than that you could be missing some other driver in the system control sheet.

Make sure you have the PCIC Compatible PCI to PCMCIA Bridge listed under the system devices tab in the control devices.
If not I suggest you install the Cirrus Logic PCIC Compatible PCI to PCMCIA Bridge driver. ( Hardware install/pcmcia devices.)

You might need to change the input/output range and select in/Out ranges, from 0104 - 0107 to 0108 - 010B.
