After upgrading to Windows XP, my Norcent RW481 will not burn. After about 3 or so minutes into the burning process, the system gives an error message of "SCSI Target Error". I currently was using Nero 5.10, (this is the most updated version via Nero's website), so I uninstalled 5.10 and downloaded their 6.0 demo version. Received the same error. All burning was working properly when I was running Windows 98, 2nd Edition. I went to the Norcent web site for an updated driver and there was none. The RW will play music CD's, run programs and even burn a MP3 file but refuses to burn and audio file. Any suggestions?

I downloaded the ASPI v4.71, performed the check, which nothing was there, so i performed the install. If finished, rebot and tried the Nero 6.0 software again. the message that i received was "unspecified Target Error". By the way, i have and internal CDRW

In your first message you stated "The RW will play music CD's, run programs and even burn a MP3 file but refuses to burn and audio file." What did you mean???? MP3 files ARE audio/music files. Did you mean instead "refuses to burn any audio file"? If it can't burn "any audio file" then it also cannot burn mp3 as they are audio files too.

If your drive is an "Atapi" ide connected drive, winasp check will not be effective since there is no SCSI device in your system. Even tho aspi is required for ide burners, it is usually provided by the os or/and by the recording software with later versions of recording sofware. The first version of Nero that was supported in Windows XP was version 5.5.5.1, so if your Nero is that version or later it should work properly. You can read the file included with the Nero Help Tool here: http://www.nero.com/en/helptool/243.htm... however I doubt the sections pertaining to SCSI apply to your situation unless your drive is a scsi connected drive, (doubtful but possible).

I would recommend you uninstall all recording software and reinstall only ONE. Never have 2 or more recording softwares installed. Double check the Nero website to insure the version you are using is compatible with the drive AND Windows XP os. Try recording at a slower speed than drive is capable of... eg: if the drive is rated at 48X, try recording at 24x or slower... be sure to turn off all running programs, especially anti-virus software, screen savers, and disk management programs that could interupt the burning process. Try creating a disk image of the data you wish to burn first, then burn that image to disk. Also don't forget to run scandisk and defrag (before burning disk) to maximize the read speed and to put files in continguous order on the hard drive.

Also. if you haven't read it, please read our CD-RW Help Guide at this url:
