You'll see there is no such audio chip as Intel 82801. Sound chips bear names like Realtek, Cmedia, ADI SoundMax, Conexant, and Sigmatel.

Laptops cannot use generic drivers like desktops can. They require specific drivers from the laptop maker, made specifically for that laptop. HD (ie: High Definition) is the new sound standard recently introduced that replaced the older AC'97 sound standard that ran from 1997 to about 2007. HD chips require the UAA driver along with the regular sound driver. Some are combined and some come in 2 different files. This particular laptop requirements are listed farther down this post.

You can get some helpful info about this laptop by clicking here. (http://www.uktsupport.co.uk/advent/laptop/7107.htm)

As stated on that page, The laptop should have been supplied with a "Notebook Utility CD" which contains a copy of the drivers and user manual. There is also a copy of the drivers on the laptop itself, you can find it by browsing to the c:\applications\drivers folder.

Intel has this Conexant driver posted on this page. (downloadcenter.intel.com/confirm.aspx?httpDown=http://downloadmirror.intel.com/10537/eng/3.14.0.0_WHQL.zip&agr=&ProductID=2475&DwnldId=10537&strOSs=&OSFullName=&lang=eng)

The 7111 is basically a rebadged Quanta TW3 (you should see TW3 printed on the underside of the laptop) so you can also download the drivers from Intel's website.
Conexant Function Driver for Venice High Definition Audio Device.

(First install MS Windows* XP SP 2, then kb888111.exe (downloadcenter.intel.com/confirm.aspx?httpDown=http://downloadmirror.intel.com/11036/eng/kb888111.exe&agr=&ProductID=2475&DwnldId=11036&strOSs=&OSFullName=&lang=eng) [UAA driver] patch, then the audio driver listed above). When finished you should have great sound.
