Had to install fresh copy of windows on friends PC and, of course, he had no driver disks

Found most drivers except the correct audio driver. It's onboard sound on an Intel 82801FB(M) ICH6 controller. I was fairly sure this used the Realtek AC 97 driver but it seems to crash and reboot when I try to install that.

Here is the Everest report:

I had a siialar problem in this thread which Jerry K resolved for me:
http://forums.driverguide.com/showthread.php?t=45034

Even though both PC's seem to be using 82801 hardware, that solution isn't working. Installing the UAA driver did get the system to recognise sound hardware (see screen grab below), but trying to install the contexant driver gives me a "Cannont find hardware specified" error message.

Screen grab of device manager:

If any other information required, please let me know. Thanks in advance.

Intel 82801 is not a sound chip.... SoundMax AD1888 is. Lots of motherboard makers and vendors used this chip for sound.

The three things missing from your report is:

1: is this motherboard a retail motherboard or OEM?
2: If the first, what motherboard brand and model?
3: If OEM, what pc brand and model did it come installed in?

Not knowing what motherboard you have prevents me from helping you. If it's an Asus M3N-VM DH, then you can download this sound driver here:

ftp://dlsvr02.asus.com/pub/ASUS/misc/audio/ad1988/AD1988_51014530_32bit.zip

or

ftp://dlsvr03.asus.com/pub/ASUS/misc/audio/ad1988/AD1988_51014530_32bit.zip

If it's an Intel® D201GLY motherboard, you can get the sound driver here:

http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?ProductID=2773&DwnldID=13365&lang=eng

If the motherboard is an Asus P4P800S-X, you can get the sound driver here:

http://members.driverguide.com/driver/detail.php?driverid=244761

There are probably dozens of other motherboards that use the same audio chip. See the problem by not providing the important data about your system/motherboard?

And please use our driver request forum next time you need a driver. Thread moved.

You gave my brain a much needed kick.

It's an IBM Thinkcentre but didn't have a model number on it.
They use Soundmax and I'd already tried a Soundmax driver from the Lenovo site that hadn't worked cause it was for a different model.

Searched google images for bout an hour to eventually find out it was an A51.
Here's a crap image but I made the shape out at least:

Anyway, here's the link for the "IBM Thinkcentre A51 (type 8122, 8123, 8124, 8129, 8131, 8132, 8133, 8134, 8135, 8136, 8137, 8138, 9212) / M51e (type 9213)" audio driver to save another poor sod the trouble:

I was relying too much on the Everest info.
Sorry for bein a pain anyway Jerry, and thanks for at least gettin' my brain in gear.
