I downloaded the gateway e-4200-450 bios update from this site. I even followed the gateway instructions of getting a pre-formatted IBM 3.5 floppy to put the update files on and boot from.

I get a "non-system disk" error. The drive works. )I booted from it to partition my new WD800jb drive.) I'm trying to get around the 8.4G barrier for the new HD.

Any thoughts?

What boot disk did you use, is the bios Award or AMI.
What flash utility do you have?
Need more info on how you pereceded with the flash!
