Purchased this CD burner with the understanding that it would include instructional CD & would work with Windows XP Pro. No instructions; claims Windows98 format. Purchased & downloaded your driver upgrade, but it still does not recognize the hardware. USB port was check with digital camera & is fine. Please help - all I want to do is copy CD's. Thanks.

I don't understand your term: "claims Windows98 format."

"Purchased & downloaded your driver upgrade"? What driver upgrade and why? USB optical drives never require a driver since the OS provides native support for this drive providing the USB port is in working order.

This drive is PLUG and PLAY in Windows XP. So no instructions are needed.

Some history and additional info is needed in order to help you.

Is the drive new or used? Did it come already prepped, ie: partitioned and formatted? If not then the drive will need to be prepped first using the factory provided software or by using the partitioning and formatting programs Microsoft included with the OS.

Did it come from Digital Research installed in the USB enclosure or was it assembly by you or some other vendor? If it was factory assembly, it should not require prepping but if anyone else assembled it, you will need to do this very important step before the OS will be able to detect the drive. Has it every worked for you?

This drive was sold by many vendors including BTC and Hi-Val.

It should contain firmware revision 001U. If it doesn't, then you should consider upgrading the firmware. It can be downloaded from this site (cd-rom.free-driver-download.com/BTC/10430/BTC-BCE-5224UI-External-USB2.0-CD-R-RW-Firmware-001U--For-Win9x-ME-2000-XP.html).
