USB optical drives never require a driver when used in Windows XP. This device is 100% Plug 'n Play in Windows XP providing it's a good drive and plugged into a working USB port. The OS will detect and install a USB drive automatically without user intervention within 4-7 seconds normally. When it does so, you will get notification that the install was successful and that the drive is now ready to use.

If it has never been prepped, ie: partitioned and formatted, then that task will need to be performed using drive prep software usually provided by the vendor/manufacturer or by using the built-in partitioning and formatting feature that Microsoft included with the OS.

DVD burner drives also require compatible 3rd. party recording and dvd decoding software as Windows XP does not support those two tasks. ie: burning dvd and cd-rw disks and playing dvd movie disks. My favorite is Nero (any version from 5.x and up) and PowerDVD. These are the 2 highest rated software's available.

Hello Jerry K!

recently bought LG GP08LU10, reason is my laptop's dvd ROM is not working (it can't read anything. When i go to "my computer", it's just blank).

My laptop is old ( Toshiba Satellite Pro m15-s405) which the specs has 2x usb 2.0.

When I plug it, it doesnt recognise the drive (not visible when i click on "my computer). Also, when my mouse suddenly not working. It seems like when i plug in my LG, the other USB device *such as mouse or digicam* is not working.

I have tried installing the file from microsoft as you recommended and it's also not working.

Help..

thanks jerry.

External USB optical drives do not require any driver or any other file, so I'm curious what file from Microsoft you're referring to? I've read my post 2 twice and I don't see any reference to install some Microsoft file.

If your usb drive is missing from My Computer then it has not been properly detected/installed by the OS. Check the USB port in Device Manager to insure the problem is not there. Also make sure the cable length doesn't exceed 1 meter in length.
