Optical drives never require a driver when used in Windows XP. The OS provides native support that allows this drive to read a data or music disk and to burn a cd-r disk. It (ie: the Windows XP OS) does not provide any support for burning cd-rw or dvd disks and does not provide any support for playing dvd movie disks. For those tasks, compatible 3rd. party recording and dvd decoding software is required.

Do you mean instead dvd drive stopped working after i did a registry clean?

You need to stop using the registry clean program until you fully understand how to use it and how to adjust the program settings.

Have you tried using the restore program built-in Windows XP and choose a date just prior to running the registry clean program? If not you need to do so. Without a backup of the registry, there's not much you can do other than reinstall the OS. Alway perform a restore point before running a program that modifies the registry and before installing any software. If you don't, you will usually experience the problem you are now having.

Is the drive listed in My Computer and Device Manager?

Same issue for me. However, I deleted some DVD software and forced me to figure out why quit working. I had to do a regedit and delete the upper and lower filters. There's plenty of info on this out there for Mashita drives. Panasonic will tell you to go see the manufacturer of the notebook because they won't support it. Mine works now using the generic cdrom.sys drivers that come with XP. I'm still looking for a driver, however, and have yet to find it anywhere.

CDROM.SYS along with imapi.sys, redbook.sys, and storprop.dll are the Windows drivers. No other driver is required or available.

The regedit instructions for "deleting the upper and lower filters" is not new... I've been posting this fix for over 5 years... if you doubt what I say, just read a few threads in this forum, approximately every 3rd. thread contains instructions and links for files that will do the registry edit automatically instead of manually. So, for the fact that you did no reading whatsoever is indicated by you not knowing this already. And if you had read a few pages in this forum, you would also realize that dvd drives require dvd decoding software to be installed before they will be able to read/play dvd movie disks. ie: WinDVd or PowerDVD (along with many other brands). So, if your only problem is you cannot play dvd movie disks, that's caused by the removal of the dvd decoding software. Re-install the dvd decoding software and problem solved. This software has no effect on reading regular data or music cd's, only with dvd disks.
