Have computer with windows 98 - last known thing was the person tried installing mcafee updates.
Now a box comes up asking for location of zxgxg.exe .I can not access anything because of this .

So it sounds like it erased most files but left some of the work for you to do. You'll need to type regedit in the run box under start menu. Once the registry ediot comes up, type in your zxgxg.exe file and it should come up, to where you can remove it and then click ok as needed. You have to remember that or else your changes won't be saved. Good luck

find the file / copy it from another source onto your startup floppy/then return the file into your system file in windows. I dont know the file you mention but if your locked out thats what i would do. yu'll need change your boot up sequence to a then c. next take your start up disk the with missing file on it and insert the disk and boot. then from your c promt move the file from the a drive to the c drive windows system file. try that. use /edit/ to move the file with cut and paste.

- Restart the machine after POST press F8, from list select command line option, which brings you the [C:>] prompt type the following and press enter after each line:

cd windows
cd options
scanreg /restore

After this you will see a list of dates appear, select the last known good date before all this happened. If this don't work you're in deep doo-doo1

Start your PC (Win 98) under Command Prompt Only (DOS MODE)
(Press F8) to obtain start menu

under dos:

type SCANREG /RESTORE and choose the last good one before the upgrade!
try 2 days before if necessary
reboot when registry is restored
restart under Command Prompt (DOS MODE)
type SCANREG / FIX

if you have Norton Utilities, start WINDOCTOR (www.symantec.com)
if You habe SYSTEM MECHANIC strat the PC MAINTENANCE (www.iolo.com)
if you believe in god just pray and brun a few candles :-)
