Use xp home, purchased replacement for a ball type ps2 mouse with an optical usb mouse, two button + scroll wheel, generic model, no software.
Installation went ok except scroll wheel did not work.
Have uninstalled in the device manager. Reloaded windows and receive found new hardware, then hardware installation wizzard, select install automatically. After finish system restarts automatically. On restart receive window with installation not correct and continue button or abort installation button.
If continue button then mouse not working.

You might want to try plugging it into a different usb port. Or test it on a different machine to isolate the problem.
