I have an hp laserjet 4 plus which also has a duplexor. I have now reinstalled drivers about 4 times. My problem is that for some reason the drivers/windows do not recognize the duplexor. This means that noplace in the printer properties is the duplex unit seen and, when printing, does not work - even though it is on as far as the printer is concerned.

I have another, wireless, computer next to my chair in the front room. This computer uses that hp laserjet as its printer. On this machine the properties do show the duplex unit as installed and it works! This is very mysterious. I have had this printer for a number of years with no problem. Then I decided to build up a new machine for my wife (hers is where it is physically attached) and I had to re-do everything and, evidently, screwed up on this printer driver thing. Oh - the front room computer had this printer installed before I updated my wife's machine. If I could figure out what driver was downloaded into this machine then I could copy it to the new machine but I have no idea what its called or where its at.

I am running xp pro and printers do not appear in the device manager so I can't see the name of the driver.

I would be truly grateful for any help on this one as it has me baffled.

Does your term duplexor mean it prints on both sides of the paper?

What OS is used on both machines?

Are you using this one printer solo on 2 different machines or are you using the printer as a network printer?

What driver are you using? ie: the one that came with the machine or one from some other source?

If networked, how are you connecting the printer to the computer used as the server?

Also, if Duplexor is a term for describing a printer that prints on both sides of the printer, are you saying it takes a different driver for a Duplexor printer than it does if the printer only printed single sided? I always thought that enabling a duplex printer was accomplished by setup within the printer using the front panel buttons and the menu.

I don't believe that HP ever wrote a Windows XP driver for this printer model, however, it is supported natively with drivers Microsoft included with the OS.

Thanks for the reply. This has been a frustrating experience. I have, however, finally fixed it. What I did was simply try every driver I could find until I found one that worked. As far as I can tell almost all laserjet drivers (through 5) will work on this machine to one extent or another and I finally found one.

A duplexor does duplex (double sided) printing. This printer is on a network and all machines that use it had a previous driver installed that worked before I installed the new machine. I have been at this for over 35 years and am personally convinced that its ALL done with smoke, mirrors and a little magic.

I have found that to fix something one must first beat one's head against a wall for about a day, then read the documentation, and then, stop and think about it and then do it all over again.

Thanks again for the reply.

lol, that's about right and I feel your pain bro. I've had similar problems before and for the life of me, I cannot remember how to do it again (or how to tell someone what I did to fix the problem) without some hair pulling and teeth grinding. Glad you got it going. If you have or ever come by "step-by-step" instructions, be sure to post 'em. Thanks
