Optical drives never require a driver other than what the OS supplies natively. Windows XP provides native support that allows this drive to read a data or music disk and to burn a cd-r disk. It doesn't provide support to burn cd-rw disks... for that task compatible 3rd. party recording software is required.

Is the drive listed in My Computer and Device Manager?

What exactly is the problem?

Computer recognizes the drive, but doesn't show a way to format the disk when you right click the mouse. Although the drive is listed when you want to save a document in Word, it won't save and the error message is "Word cannot save or create this file. Make sure that the disk you want to save the file on is not full, write-protected or damaged."

You cannot save files to the optical drive direct using that method. You must first save the file to hard drive, then use burning software to burn the file to cd-r or cd-rw disk.

Note: only cd-rw disks can be formatted. And you cannot format an optical disk by right clicking the mouse. That option only applies to hard drives. I format my cd-rw disks using Nero 6 burning software.
