I have no clue what your statement means: "I have a Nero software conflict that knocked out my disc drives (cd and dvd)". What kind of conflict? Conflict with what? External drives cannot have a IDE interface... external drives can only have USB, SCSI, or Parallel port interface. If you have a USB external drive, it's plug and play in Windows XP providing you plug it into a working USB port.

Optical drives never require a driver when used in any Windows os from Win95 up. Windows XP and Windows Vista both provide native support that allows this drive to read a data or music disk and to burn a cd-r disk. No support for playing dvd disks or for burning dvd or cd-rw disks. For those tasks, compatible 3rd. party recording & dvd decoding software is required.
