Optical drives never require a driver when used in Windows XP. The OS provides native support that allows this drive to read a data or music disk.
Is the drive missing from My Computer and Device Manager?

Thanks Jerry,Sorry for late reply
No the drive is not missing from My Computer. Every time the system boots it gives a message Found New Hardware, or it hangs and one can see that the CD-ROM light flickering. The Device Manager has yellow marking. I have updated the firmware. I have even tried by installing DOS drivers by loading in HIGH MEMORY. Is there any way to stop this frustrating process each time the system starts.

Windows XP does not give any notification when it's installing an internal IDE optical drive. In fact, you won't know it's installed until you look in My Computer and Device Manager (or Windows Explorer) and you see it listed there. So there's gotta be some other hardware that's being detected and giving you the "Found New Hardware" notification.
Before you do anything else, REMOVE those DOS drivers that you installed. Running DOS drivers in a Windows OS will drastically reduce your machines speed and make it very sluggish. Also be sure to clean any remnants of the DOS command lines in autoexec.bat and config.sys files, ie: device=xxxx.sys and mscdex.exe (if the un-install program fails to rid the system of them). Windows XP doesn't need any help with the operation of a cd-rom reader. DOS drivers are only to be used when your running the system booted into pure DOS (not a DOS box with Windows running in the background).
Do you remember what you were doing to the machine when this problem began? (like install certain software or change or modify any hardware or hardware settings? Also, you might want to boot into Safe Mode (by tapping the F8 key during bootup) to see if the drive will work in that mode. If it does, then some other program is preventing the drive from working.
I suggest after you do away with those DOS files, to uninstall the drive in Device Manager and reboot the machine. Now look to see if the drive is listed in Device Manager and works ok. If it still doesn't work, try booting the machine with a bootable disk (like a Windows install disk). First, you'll new to change the boot order in BIOS setup to make the optical drive the first boot device. You will now see a new message on your screen (during bootup) that says Press any key to boot from the optical drive. Be sure to press any key within 5 seconds otherwise it will revert back to the hard drive as the boot device. Now.... if the drive fails to boot the machine, the drive is defective (or some cable has come loose).
Is this a new drive installation or has the drive always been in the machine? Has it ever work for you?
