When I had Win ME before 2000, I really liked a couple things I can't seem to figure out w/2000:

w/ME when you did control-alt-del and it showed you all your running tasks, the ONLY two things you HAD to leave running were: EXPLORER and SYSTEM TRAY...........does anyone know if there is a simple "must leave running" only in Windows 2000 Professional? and:

w/ME I could extract whatever files were coming up as missing or corrupted and replace them by simply typing in the RUN dialog box MSCONFIG and once there, I believe it was the expand or extract box that took you to where you filled in the name of the file and where to get it from (windows-options-cabs)
and where you wanted it installed to. Does anyone know what I need to fill in re WHERE TO EXTRACT FILE FROM???!! I've tried getting them from my 2000 system disc and that doesn't work. I know w/Me all the files were IN the computer because I had no system disc, only recovery discs. Are the 2000 files also installed in the pc when you load in 2000? I'm really stumped.

Please help! Thanks!

Windows File Checker Command-line Options (Windows 2000)
The Windows File Checker is used to scans all the protected system files and replaces incorrect versions with a cached copy of the correct version. These are the command-line options to control the Windows file protection (WFP) utility.

The System File Checker is initiated with using the "SFC" command. Below are the command-line option which can be used with this utility.
SFC /SCANNOW Scans all protected system files immediately.
SFC /SCANONCE Scans all protected system files once at the next boot.
SFC /SCANBOOT Scans all protected system files at every boot.
SFC /CANCEL Cancels all pending scans of protected system files.
SFC /QUIET Replaces all incorrect file versions without prompting the user.
SFC /ENABLE Enables Windows File Protection for normal operation
SFC /PURGECACHE Purges the file cache and scans all protected system files immediately.
SFC /CACHESIZE=x Sets the file cache size

you will need the Cd disk with win200 on

Same commands for XP

Q: What is the Windows 2000 version of "msconfig.exe" - When I try to run "msconfig" I get the message "Cannot find the file 'msconfig'...
A: msconfig was not provided with Windows 2000 and must be loaded check out the article at

http://www.techadvice.com/win2000/m/msconfig_w2k.htm

or check out the
Startup Control Panel found at
http://www.mlin.net/

BTW neither are for replacing files
