No driver is required since Windows XP provides native support that allows this drive to read a data or music disk. To play dvd disks, compatible dvd decoding software (like WinDVD or PowerDVD) is required.

I have the same DVD burner and it shows that it is installed properly. Problem: It doesn't read CD's or CD-Rs properly and I have had problems with CD's not burning successfully 3 times in a row before I get a successful copy. I put the CDROM.SYS found here into my SYS32 folder, uninstalled my DVD burner, restarted the computer and still no change. The OS I'm running is XP Pro LE with SP2.

cdrom.sys belongs in this folder: C:\WINDOWS\System32\drivers\

Find someone with a DVD writer and test the disks, on their machine.
If they work, then your DVD writer has probably crapped out.

Did you look up (or read the documentation) about the list of disks types your DVD will write to?

The NEC ND-2100A 8X DVD+R/RW Drive is a DVD+ burner. It will write to DVD+R and DVD+RW media as well as
CD-R and CD-RW media. It will not write dual layer.
