that's a DOS driver. You don't need it to run Windows 98, you only use it when you need to enable the drive in DOS mode only. If you allow it to load when booting into Windows, you will suffer from a sluggish operating machine.

This laptop boots from a WIN98 Startup Disk but the CDROM drive doesn't seem to be recognized. The goal here is to install the OS. The Compaq literature made it sound like CPQLTECD.exe was needed as a proprietory driver for the CDROM.

You can download CPQLTECD.sys here: http://members.driverguide.com/driver/detail.php?driverid=193907

but I don't know about CPQLTECD.exe

My mistake on the .exe extension. And thanks for the help. I searched for CPQLTECD.SYS on the web but mostly got *.pdf Compaq White Papers. On Compaq's Support site I searched across all Operating Systems and various notebooks but only got one probable result as a download. The InstallShield language was Portuguese and unfortunately the installer files were corrupted. I got no results on DriverGuide until you helped me out. Did I miss something in my search?

I found it by using Google and typed the file name into the box. It was the first hit on the Google page.
