Probably the latest bios update. Are you saying that you cannot install the SP2 update or you cannot install Windows XP?

Are you trying to downgrade from Vista to XP? If so, you may need an older bios.

I was unable to find any BIOS files posted for this model and Windows XP:

I have XP loaded and can install all updates up to SP2. When I install SP2 the laptop continually reboots at the Windows Welcome screen so I have to uninstall or do a system restore in Safe Mode. Gateway has provided no help short of directing me to their paid support for $60 for 30 minutes. Microsoft has pointed me back to Gateway to see if there is a BIOS update for this model.

Did the machine come from the factory with Windows XP or Vista installed on it?
If it came with XP installed on it, I can see no reason why the firmware would cause a problem when installing SP2.

I wouldn't waste the $60 with Gateway because chances are after doing so, your problem still won't be resolved.
