I have been given a used Toshiba Satellite Pro Laptop on which I have just completed a clean reinstall of XP as various problems with Windows existed. Unfortunately, the sound no longer works. I ran Belarc Advisor before reinstalling XP which under "Multimedia" referred to EDIROL UA-20 MME and SoundMax Integrated Digital Audio.
I have looked at the EDIROL driver download and it seems to apply to an external device not something on board the laptop. I downloaded a SoundMAX driver but this would not install as it could not find a sound card.
I am a bit at a loss as to what to do next. Any suggestions?

Which Satellite Pro laptop model do you have? Laptops require specific drivers from the laptop maker. You cannot use generic drivers on a laptop as they will fail install.

It's a Toshiba Satellite Pro A40 PSA45E.

I'm not sure how, but by selecting Intel as the manufacturer of the audio device in Hardware setup and using XP supplied drivers, I now have sound. It sounds a bit tinny so I am not convinced that the proper audio driver is installed.

Try this driver: http://cdgenp01.csd.toshiba.com/content/support/downloads/pm200sndx.exe

Note: uninstall the current sound driver before installing this one.

I managed to find all the drivers I needed on the Toshiba Europe web site. The first time I looked there the A40 model type was not recognised, subsequent visit and there it was. All updated drivers downloaded and one happy laptop. Thanks for your advice.:)
