Why are you running Windows 98SE on a laptop pc that was shipped from the factory with Windows 2000 and Windows XP installed on it? IBM does not support Windows 98SE with this model.

http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/MIGR-55029.html#audio

The problem with laptops is they cannot use generic drivers.... they must use drivers made for that particular laptop and issued by IBM. Finding a driver that will work in Windows 98SE will be next to impossible unless IBM made one but as you can see from the link above, they don't.... at least not for this model.

Another problem is there is no such audio chipset as Intel 82801. Just check all the hundreds of identical sound requests in our forums and you will see. The bios in the pc fools Everest into stating it's an Intel 82801. There's only a few sound chipset makers in the world amongst them are Realtek, Cmedia, ADI SoundMax, and Sigmatel. Desktops can use generic drivers but laptops cannot as they will fail install.

i am running 98SE because the programs that are specific to bell canada, my employer, only work with that OS. the laptop came with various drivers removed for various reasons, including them not wanting us to use them for anything other than work, which in todays world is pretty unrealistic. especially when part of my job is to do things on the internet that require sound...

that being said, if the answer is that there is no chipset or driver that will make the soundcard work, that is fine, an answer, no matter what it is was all i was looking for.

lastly, i am not and was not fooled into thinking that i was looking for an intel chipset. i was simply stating that the only reason that was there was because we were trying various drivers and chipsets to see if any would work.

i did my research before posting on this website as well as many others looking for any help before i just fired off an identical post which im sure you get umpteen thousand times per day.

the reason i found nothing on the net was because like i suppose you are saying there is no driver. which is fine. i simply post all this because im sure somewhere down the line this will be helpful to someone, instead of me just saying ok thanks.
