DVD drives do not require any external driver as the OS provides the support/driver. Windows XP alone will allow the drive to read a data or music disk and also burn a cd-r disk. For anything else, you will need 3rd. party software, ie: Easy Cd Creator or Nero (for burning cd-rw/cd-r or dvd disks) and WinDVD or PowerDVD (needed to play dvd movie disks).

It sounds like you have either a defective drive or problems with your dvd decoder software.
