Optical drives never require a driver when used in Windows XP. Optical drives are not manually installed using a driver like other hardware. Windows installs a drive automatically without user intervention. It doesn't notify you of "new hardware found" either.... in fact you won't know it happened until you open "My Computer" and see the drive listed there.

The OS provides native support that allows this drive to read a data or music disk.

Thank you for taking the time to reply, but I'm at a loss to understand the unit came with a installation cd, and now when I try to get it to play it it just won't, at one time a windows message came up saying," New hardware found Optirite cd-rw cw5201 ", but when I clicked on the balloon nothing happened.Could it be a Windows XP problem tied in to MS-DOS ?.

Is the drive listed in My Computer and Device Managerr? Does Device Manager show any flags on the drive or does it show as working properly?
