Don't guess, open Device Manager and check the USB port(s).

Okay have done! Everything's fine. Would it have to do with the fact that I'm on XP and not Vista? I'm sure i'm just installing it all wrong!

Having Windows XP is better. Not much hardware has Vista support. How would you be installing it wrong? An EXE file is self-installing/extracting. Not much way to go wrong with installation. Give us some details... ie: do you get errors when installing or does the installation report successful?

I get an install shield wizard that takes me through the installation, it says it's successful but then the camera icon in the taskbar still says it's disconnected

It appears as tho the driver is ok, but I don't know what is the exact problem. Do you know for sure the camera is a working device?

absolutely positive the webcam is working. shall i try uninstalling it and reinstalling it making sure it's DEFINITELY attatched to the laptop?

This camera seems notoriously bad - I've had installation troubles too - the install wizard closes itself halfway through and then nothing happens. I'm dowloading the link above, and it is taking ages. All i wanted was a simple web cam.....
