Vista keeps saying this is a CD; it will not recognise it as a DVD. I have read that I should go to the registry and delete the referances to upper and lower limits, but there are no such references in my registry. It is an ATA thing.

Support Information:
Device Type: CD / DVD
Manufacturer: LiteOn Technology
Model: SHM165h6s
Interface: Other
Operating System: Windows Vista
Age of Device: Not specified
FCCID:

Type of drive: dvd-r/cd-rw (dvd burner, dvd reader, & cd burner combo)
Location: internal
What recording software are you using?: Other (Other: Windows DVD writer or whatever it is called)

Find it on DriverGuide (http://members.driverguide.com/index.php?action=srch&sm=b&aax=&qa6=600&qa5=3&qa7=1801&dp=3&qm0=SHM165h6s&jmd=and&fzz=d) | Find it with Google (http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&q=LiteOn+Technology+CD+%2F+DVD++SHM165h6s+Windows+ Vista+) | Research manufacturer LiteOn Technology (http://members.driverguide.com/index.php?action=getinfo&companyid=600)

That registry fix is only for drives that are not detected, ie: not visible in My Computer.

Do you have compatible 3rd party recording and dvd decoding software installed? ie: Easy Cd Creator or Nero and WinDVD or PowerDVD? If not you will need to obtain install.

Windows Vista has built in support for burning cd-r disks but not for burning dvd disks.

Thanks Jerry. I appreciate your help and hope you win the lottery. Are any freeware programs available that will do the job?

Regards,
Phil
