I have a Dell Dimension 3100 that has a PHILIPS DVD+-RW DVD8801 drive. The drive seems to read CD's, but when you open the drive there is nothing in there it is just like the CD was empty. The DVD-ROM drive shows up in device manager and says it has no conflits with any other hardware. It looks like it is using the windows drivers for the device. I looked for drivers that are specific to the drive to see if it would fix the problem, but I couldn't find any. Any help would be appreciated.

This is not a driver problem as the driver is provided natively by the OS.

If "when you open the drive there is nothing in there it is just like the CD was empty" then it most likely is. Have you tried inserting a disk which contains data?

In order to read dvd disks, compatible 3rd. party dvd decoding software like WinDVD or PowerDVD is required.

Is the drive listed/shown in My Computer?
