have an EMachines W2247 model 2 yrs old, the device manager shows a yellow exclamation mark to a "windows system management bios driver". called emachine support and tried a "rollback driver", "last known good configuration" and also "system restore" which did nothing to restore this "bios driver", also tried windows updates for the driver to no avail...went to EMachines site but no "bios driver" is listed for download...does anyone know what exactly this driver is for or how to find one that matches this computer...many programs I see now are freezing or are not working...any help would be greatly appreciated

Microsoft System Management BIOS Driver" is: mssmbios.sys

It resides in the folder: C:\WINDOWS\system32\DRIVERS\

Check to see if the driver is present and is version: 5.1.2600.2180 {xpsp_sp2_rtm.040803-2158}

If not then you have not installed sp2 updates properly or you have an older version of the driver installed.

thank you ever so much for your help....
I found it in:C:/WINDOWS/SoftwareDistribut as that version exactly, can I now just use device manager to locate it?...saved the file to desktop or should I just download SP 2 once again?...that download I believe is what started this mess.....thank you again

sounds like you had a failed sp2 update installation. But again you didn't give us much to work with, eg: did you try to do the update or did you only download the update package?

I would just try re-installing SP2 from Windows Updates or download the entire thing here (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=049c9dbe-3b8e-4f30-8245-9e368d3cdb5a&displaylang=en) and run it. I would suggest making your own Restore point before beginning the install. That way you can get back to where you were before the update if a problem occurs.

Depending on your specific problem, here are links to a couple of update problems and specific solutions:
