It unlikely that Gateway would post a non-working driver. Try uninstalling everything related to sound and then reboot the pc. After reboot, try reinstalling it again.

Gateway has dropped the ball, as you say, the drivers on the site for sound are only for Vista... All of us using XP (in it's various incarnations) are just S.O.L. (for those who haven't kept up that's Stupidly Out of Luck).

the mx6027 uses a conexant chip a search for that chip gets you the following http://members.driverguide.com/index.php?companyid=247&devicetypeid=19&qm0=&ref=&action=wizard_step_3&company=247&Submit=%A0%A0SELECT+COMPANY%A0%3E%3E%A0%A0)
out of those the 10th option aclink audio seems to work.
I just setup an mx for a client using that, a note as the person indicated in the link that it was the only working one for the 6025 this is the only one I found that worked for the 6027 at least as of yet. The direct link is

Thank you sooo much. I've installed windows 5 times now trying to get audio. First they said it was because I did WMC edition and that the drivers were only for XP. So I tried XP home and XP Pro with no results. Then I finally find this page and now I have sound. Thanks so much!

I didn't have any problem downloading the files from the 2 links by member gobison. They redirect to another host site but there's no problem with doing that.... you just have to type the characters in the box and then wait until the count down timer gets to zero.
On Bongo.com, FREE downloaders are limited to 1 concurrent download and a 35 second waiting period between downloading files.
