Do you mean you cannot write dvd disks? What exactly is the problem. If you have Nero (any late version) it should work great to burn dvd's. It might be helpful to include some details.

and btw, optical drives don't require any drivers. All support is provided native by the OS and by burning software.

Thanks for the reply,
I can not Burn DVD's. I have the newest nero burning program that can burn DVD's. I can't even make a Data DVD. The drive has the capability to burn DVD's but it isn't working

what do you mean by "not working"? We need some details before we can offer much in the way of help.

Has the drive ever worked? New drive, used drive, new installation?

Is the drive listed in My Computer and Device Manager?

Some details from Device Manager in DVD/CD Drives and IDE Controllers would be helpful.

Will it read a data or music disk? Will it play a dvd disk?

Please give us some details of the burning problem and if you get errors. What are you trying to burn, ie: avi, mpeg, disk to disk, hard drive to disk. Man give us something to work with here.

If I told you my car didn't work, would you know how to tell me to fix it with the vague details I provided. We can't see over your shoulder to see what's wrong or what your doing so you gotta help us before we can help you.

I fixed it myself. I guess you don't need details anymore, but thanks for the help.

So unless you provide some details, this entire post is a waste of time. But that's ok, keep your secret fix to yourself and everyone else having the same problem will have to figure it out for themselves as you did.

Hi,
Can you please let me know where I could get the driver for a Pioneer DVD-RW DVR-K16A - toshiba laptop. My DVD drive can read cds but cannot read dvds. The drive continues to make strange noises when a dvd is inserted into it.

Thanks.

Optical drives never require a driver other than what the OS provides natively. Windows XP provides native support that allows the drive to read a data or music disk and to burn a cd-r disk.... nothing else. Playing dvd movie disks require a software dvd decoder like WinDVD or PowerDVD.

A drive that makes noise is because of 2 things:

1: The drive has a problem and needs repair or replacement.
or
2: The disk is not round or out of balance.

If you have attached any label to the disk and it's not perfectly round and positioned perfectly centered, that will make a drive noisy when the disk is spinning. It will cause vibration just like an unbalanced tire on an automobile.

Hi,
I tried booting the system using the recovery dvd disc provided by toshiba, and that works. This means that there is a software problem because the hardware problem would not have allowed booting through the recovery dvd. Unfortunately, the driver for the dvd drive is on the recovery dvd and either I would have to full system recovery to reinstall the driver or probably connect an external dvd drive once I have booted into windows and run the recovery dvd on it to see if I could selectively install the driver for the dvd drive. The latter option seems better!

Thanks

Fix #1:
If your problem is non-detection, ie: drive is not listed in "My Computer", please read post #24 in this thread: http://forums.driverguide.com/showthread.php?t=21669&page=4

It contains manual instructions on the delete the upper and lower filters fix, that will solve the problem.

Fix #2:
Also, there is a STICKY posted in this forum that contains a file from Microsoft and instructions that will do this registry edit automatically instead of having to do it manually.

Fix #3:
And here's another method that will do this procedure automatically for you if you're afraid to edit the registry manually.

http://forums.driverguide.com/showthread.php?t=22131
(automatic fix, post #7, download file: CdGone.zip)
Unzip the file, then launch it.

Fix #4:
Alternately, download and install the DVD fix from this Web site: http://www.dougknox.com/xp/scripts/xp_cd_dvd_fix.vbs

Now, after performing this fix, don't reboot yet. Next, (in Device Manager), uninstall all optical drives listed (if none are listed, continue with next step)...

Reboot the pc. Your drive(s) should now be visible in My Computer and work properly.
