I'm looking for the driver for the Panasonic UJ-850 CD/DVD ROM drive built in to a HP Pavilion dv2000 laptop. I've looked on here and other places on the internet, but no luck. The drive isn't showing up in the device manager or in the "my computer" folder, and I can't find any other proof that the computer recognizes the drive is installed. I was recently infected with a virus and this is the only that I see that was affected. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Optical drives never require any driver in Windows XP other than the driver Microsoft packaged with the os. You won't find Windows XP drivers as they don't exist anywhere but with the OS and the installation cd.

Non detection is a very common problem in Windows XP. It has been disucussed in many threads almost daily here. All you have to do to find the solution is to read.

Please read post #24 in this thread: http://forums.driverguide.com/showthread.php?t=21669&page=4

It contains instructions on the delete the upper and lower filters fix

Also, there is a STICKY posted in this forum that contains a file from Microsoft and instructions that will do this registry edit automatically instead of having to do it manually.

And here's another method that will do this automatically for you if you're afraid to edit the registry manually.

(automatic fix, post #7, download file: CdGone.zip)

and also please realize a bad drive will produce this symptom. UJ models are notorious for going bad. I've seen brand new UJ models go bad in less than 2 days.

Glad to help. That fix usually fixes the problem but sometimes folks will have a bad drive and it just won't overcome hardware failure. Thanks for the report.
