driver_fixer 11-07-2007, 01:33 AM You're welcome; good luck with your search...
tapdriver 01-16-2008, 09:58 PM You owns a rare "power media pmd3-586". (also known as a dual technology pmd3-586 or a few brands more. I have also one!
The manufacturers website has disappeared since a couple of years!
I hope you got help concerning the bios?
I'm personally looking for any informations about the 3 dip-switch banks and the jumpers bank inside that device. Those switches and Jumpers are located under the front panel close to the processor. I've played around because i'd like to replace the processor (my former p5-120) and on the other hand i'd like re-enable the onboard sound. (enabling the sound in the bios was unsuccessful)
thank you for any hint.

Repairit 01-18-2008, 08:12 PM Thanks for the follow up, tapdriver. I found a print out for the switch settings and have upgraded my laptop to a P5-200 which is the max. The dual voltage cpu does not work with the PMD3-586.
Also, my unit only has two sets of dip-switches. Switch one on the left side setting for P-200 is from left 1-on, 2-off, 3-on, 4-off, 5-on, 6-off, 7-on,
8-off. This is a 3X setting. The switch on the right, switch 2, settings from the left are 1-off, 2-on, 3-on, 4-on, 5-on, 6-off. This is a 66mhz setting.
I have the same problem with the sound. Guess I dont have the correct sound driver. Still looking for a Bios verion 607.rom or 607i.rom.

Hello Repairit,
thank you for your quick answer with all details! My Bios is a 7.0.2i from 06/08/1996 (this is printed on screen when i start the device). So my Bios release number seems to be higher but the date is older than your wanted? Strange? Maybe the filenumber is written vice versa with the releasenumber? Anyway if you are interessted in this Bios then let's talk about getting my bios out to file or something else?
The mainboard seems also to be of different hardware release then yours. Because i really have 3 dip switches! A very small one with 8-digits between the suspend button and the system buzzer and also these two banks close to the cpu-socket called sw1 and sw2. But i've only 4 digits on sw2? Then i've two jumpers on the right side of the cpu socket with an 2.9Volts and 3.3Volts remark. Concerning the missing Win98SE sound driver, i wasn't successful to find one the last couple of days. Other people too!
So let me check out what kind of soundchip is built in...

Hi again, it's a often used ***ESS ES1688F*** sound chips inside!:hdspin: So let's play around all these win95 drivers available for this chip on the web.
tapdriver.
tapdriver 01-20-2008, 10:49 PM I finally installed the sound driver on pmd3-586 !
Do the following:
1.) get the driver for the ESS-1688 Chip from here:
http://www.esstech.com/techsupp/drivers.shtm#pci
(the file for 9x is always the same called 1688_VXD1087.zip)
2.) Don't make use of their setup.exe in the zip file package!
This path will not correctly install the driver! It remains unclear why?!
Go to the system properties instead. Then the hardware icon. Install a new hardware manually (by list). So don't start a hardware lookup for any plug&play devices. Choose "audio, video and game" and "have disk.." and so on and on...
Then, without rebooting, suddenly the regular loudspeeker appears on the system bar. Sound will be ready. Good Luck! :hail:

Repairit 01-22-2008, 08:37 PM Hello again Tapdriver: Thank you for the info on the sound driver. Also, from your info, your motherboard must be different from mine. The bios in my laptop shows as 704i dated 7/1/1996. When the laptop starts up, I receive a display of "CMOS Display Type Wrong", and then the display is divided into quadrants. I was trying to find older bios to see older bios would correct the display. Again thanks for your info.
