Optical drives do not require a driver other than the one Microsoft includes with the XP OS. Please state what the problem is and include some details.

when the drive is connected... how? Internal optical drives need to be connected to the secondary ide port and jumpered according to whether they are master or slave. I've never heard of any instance where it causes malfunction of the system if done properly.

No not true. This vintage CD-writer was a redbook item and XP would recognize the drive with a generic CD-ROM driver that would not allow you to write data to the drive.

You had to get the XP-Suppliment CD from HP to install it with writer capability. I have that but the proprietary Veritus SW (Record Now and DLA) is crap.

I was hoping that maybe HP had eventually issued a driver for true XP compatibility but I guess not. Figures, for HP.

What's not true? "Burning" support is native to the Windows OS. Burning support can also come from burning software. Windows XP has built-in burning support for a cd-r disk. Burning cd-rw disks requires 3rd party burning software that's not included in Windows XP.
